Inspired by the bas-relief sculptures of ancient Rome, I developed a technique of painting with extreme texture — but only where nature intends it.
Unlike typical palette-knife work, the sky and distant mountains stay flat and smooth, while the foreground fields, bushes, and trees are sculpted thick. That contrast gives the painting its unmistakable three-dimensional presence. With large palette knives I literally sculpt the surface: aspen trunks feel like bark; poppy petals look ready to pick.
The result is tactile and organic — a landscape you don’t just see, you feel.
