The Process
I began as a portrait painter. Faces told stories, but extreme realism started to feel stifling. I wanted room for bold color and creative freedom.
My first landscape was a large poppy field — vibrant reds, rich greens — painted with large palette knives. Each stroke felt like liberation. I had found the subject that matched my style. There was no turning back.
I begin by sculpting forms with a knife loaded with thick paint. The foreground is always more textured than the background, so the landscape recedes in true depth. Aspen trunks and flower petals can actually protrude from the canvas. This technique — Textures of Life™ — gives the work its definite tactile quality.
Each layer needs drying time. Then smaller knives, cooler shadows, sparkling highlights. When the painting is finally dry, translucent glazes deepen the color and give the surface a brilliant shine.
I prefer no conventional frame. The sides of the canvas are painted as part of the piece, so the artwork itself is the focal point — ready for any wall, any room.
